The M-Uno is an exciting and innovative new mount for high precision astro photography.
It is made in Italy by DAL SASSO Srl, a company with more than 30 years of experience in the field of high precision mechanics and marketed with the AVALON INSTRUMENTS trademark.
The M-uno design was developed on the basis of the linear fast reverse, making use of the same technical concepts:
Fast Reverse technology
Computer aided design (CAD)
High quality manufacturing with digital control 5 axes CNC machines (CNC + CAM)
Absolute quality materials: Anodized aluminium from milled monobloc, stainless steel components and screws, brass components, techno-polymers
The motion transmission technology is based on the pulley-tooth belt system without play.
The design makes imaging at the meridian easy with no necessity for a meridan flip, a problem that typically affects the classic German Equatorial Mount with the danger of both the risk of touching the tripod and the need of waiting for the object cross the meridian.
The mount will track a target from East through the Meridan into the West uninterrupted.
This belt driven design produces various benefits over the traditional geared designs including
Very consistent motion, without play and the sudden peaks associated with traditional mounts, these are factors that are of particular importance for long exposure deep sky astro imaging.
Traditional mounts always suffer from backlash to a greater or lesser extent particularly in the declination axis The Linear Belt driven transmission system can now quickly reverse the Declination motion, without any backlash
This is the reason for the name: FAST REVERSE.
It is worthwhile stressing that, since the motion transmission in traditional gear-worm systems have just one contact point, any error on each of the two components will, sooner or later, result in tracking errors.
However, with the pulley-tooth belt system, no direct contact occurs and the motion is transmitted by the belt working with some 50% to 90% of the girth surface. Consequently, any errors are balanced among the cogs, and are lower in amplitude with respect to the geared ones
We have been testing the mount and have found even with very long focal length telescopes by adopting a low guide rate the M-Uno mount delivery pinpoint round stars over long exposures.
Another advantage of the single fork arm design is the absence of a long counterweight shaft. In an observatory in particular this frees up a significant amount of room.
No wear, No Friction.
No wearing effects will occur since no friction occurs amongst the various parts. In fact, the pulleys and the axes rotate on roller bearings, 13 for the right ascension, 12 for the declination.
The tooth belts are the same as used in car engines (with steel core), which are designed to work for 100.000 Km at an average speed of 2000 rpm, facing a 0-100°C thermal range in a few minutes. Compared to that, the stress supported by the belts working on these mounts is extremely low guaranteeing almost eternal life !
The mount as standard comes equipped with a Pier Top Adaptor and the Avalon Star Go Controller. For more information see below.
The Star Go has been designed and built by Avalon primarily for their own mounts but thanks to the programmable Gear Ratio and the special motor kit, it may be easily used also in different mounts from other companies.
The StarGO software, entirely written and compiled by Avalon Instruments, uses a computer to perform all the setup and management operations, including the control of various external equipment that can be connected to the control box. It is also able to control all the same control operations performed by the StarGO keypad.
The StarGO-BT application for Android devices that allows the user to interface them with the StarGO control box via a Bluetooth connection. With this application the Android devices become the perfect intelligent control pad. This application, as well as the PC StarGO, is under continuous development to add new functionalities.

The Avalon StarGo GoTo-System has been totally designed and manufactured by Avalon to meet all needs, from the beginner to the professional photographer.
StarGo - The Avalon Mounts are well known for their capability to drive the carried telescopes with extreme precision. This characteristic is due to two factors:
The first is the use of toothed belts for the motion transmission, combined with the precision and strength of CNC machined components;
The second is the use of a proprietary control system, fully developed by Avalon Instruments, capable of supplying the mount with all the needed intelligence to perform all the required operations for high performance use in visual observations but, mainly during long exposure astrophotographic Use.
The latter function is performed by the StarGO control system. It is composed of a number of main components:
1. It performs all the communications with specific components (Focuser, CCD rotator, DSLR camera, and other auxiliary devices) using direct connections and with Windows and Mac computers via USB. The wireless Bluetooth capability is also integrated in the control box to interact with intelligent devices such smartphones, tablets and, again with Windows and Mac computers.
2. The StarGO Keypad to physically command the mount and perform almost all the available and most needed operations on it.
3. The StarGO software, entirely written by Avalon Instruments, allows the Stargo to perform with a computer, all the setup and management operations, including the control of numerous external devices that can be connected to the control box, in addition to the same control operations performed by the StarGO keypad.
In Equatorial mode the M-Zero does a
meridian flip and relatively long
tubes can be used as well.
In fork mode no meridian flip is necessary.
