Skywatcher Skymax 180 Black Diamond Maksutov

The SKymax 180 Maksutov is now avaialble in Skywatchers Black Diamond finish.

This scope features razor sharp optics and a comparitively small central obstruction.

The result is a scope that provides excellent high power views with very good contrast. this is an ideal instrument for lunar and planetary use and also provides very good performance fopr deep sky work when sued with an appropriate long focal length eyepiece.

Altair Astro 150mm F1800 Rumak Maksutov Telescope

This is a high quality "Rumak" Maksutov telescope. The Rumak optical design allows a higher quality instrument with excellent field correction and very smooth optical surfaces to be made at an excellent price vs. performance point. The secondary mirror of a Rumak telescope has a different and precisely figured curvature to the front corrector plate it's mounted on - this is unlike normal Maksutovs which use a silvered spot on the back of the meniscus to reduce manufacturing costs. The result is better control of the optical correction, a flatter field, and less spherical aberration. Frankly, we've not seen anything like this before at this price and the scope truly is a great performer.

This telescope is the perfect size for the iOptron Minitower GOTO mount, with is superb tracking accuracy, fast setup and easy to use 130K object library. We used the Mak 150-1800 on our Minitower with great results. If you order a Minitower with this scope you get £50 off the package - simply choose the menu option below!

Optical performance: We've used this scope extensively. The optics are very smooth and well corrected, and contrast is very high. The 1800mm focal length means you get high power views of the planets and the Moon as well as galaxies and globular clusters. Simply divide the focal length in mm (1800mm) by the focal length of the eyepiece to work out what magnification the scope provides. We tested this scope at Kelling Heath on Saturn, the Moon, Mars and Venus, as well as numerous deep sky objects with our customers. The optics are the best value for the price we have ever seen in a Maksutov. Observers who tried the Mak 150-1800 at the April 2010 Kelling Heath Starparty were amazed when we told them the price. We have also ordered a 200mm 8" version of this scope - let us know if you want to get on the waiting list!

Please note, our first shipment will be arriving in late May/early June 2010. If you pre-order this scope, we will not charge you until the product is ready to ship to you.

Meade LX200 ACF Optical Tube Assembly

Meade ACF Advanced Coma Free Optical Tubes offer superb optics in a portable package and are available to attach to your choice of mounting.
Meade’s all new LX200R brings Advanced Ritchey-Chrétien like optics within reach of aspiring astronomers everywhere.

The LX200ACF includes all the field-proven features of the LX200 including Primary Mirror Lock, Oversized primary mirror, Plus the LX200ACF comes with observatory-class optics.

Tubes are supplied without accessories but the 8" and 10" versions do have a universal flat mounting bar running along the base of the tube as standard. We can supply mounting hardware for the 12" and 14" models to suit most equatorial mounts including Losmandy.

Ian's Thoughts:

I have used and tested a number of Meade LX200 ACF Optical tubes now. Optically these scopes are pretty advanced and give genuinely coma free images. Field coverage is good enough for larger than APS sized DSLR sensors without recourse to additional field flatteners. My own tests have shown the ACF optics to delivery sharp images with low FWHM. Combined with the Astro Physics CCDT67 .67x Focal reducer the ACF optics consistently delivery very sharp well corrected images with low FWHM. The lowest FWHM I have obtained from my site of 1.6" was aquired using a 10" ACF and my ST-10 CCD Camera. Collimation is very easy and stable. The scopes benefit from a decent aftermarket Crayford focuser. Highly recommended.

Skywatcher Explorer 190 MN Pro

The exciting new Maksutov-Newtonian from Sky-Watcher is just what astrophotographers and serious visual observers have been looking for.

The Maksutov-Newtonian design combines the best features from the Newtonian Reflector and the Maksutov-Cassegrain to create a telescope design that provides truly stunning image quality, providing high-contrast, perfectly flat images, free from false colour. The Maksutov-Newtonian design provides large aperture Apochromatic performance, with exceptional field correction, in a compact, amazingly affordable package. Stars appear as classic pinpoints across the entire field. Perfectly optimised for modern DSLR cameras as well as Cooled CCD Camera's

The premium optics are housed in a robust rolled-steel tube for excellent mechanical integrity. Five internal knife-edge baffles are included to eliminate internal reflections and further enhance contrast. The Primary Mirror is made of low thermal expansion Pyrex® glass for a significantly reduced cool-down time.

Compared to a similarly sized Schmidt-Newtonian, the Maksutov-Newtonian yields a sharper and more contrasty image. Naturally, the Maksutov-Newtonian is an excellent visual performer too!!
