CMOS technology is moving ahead at a fast rate. With Quantum Efficiencies (QEs) starting to rival those of traditional CCDs, along with low read-noise figures, some slightly below that of our CCD cameras, CMOS is starting to become a viable alternative.

For fast planetary imaging, CMOS is now the dominant sensor, however, it does suffer from amplifier glow which is inherent in all CMOS sensors and is a problem for deep-sky imaging. Many users stack thousands of short images together to achieve a longer exposure time, and this method is useful to help reduce tracking and seeing errors, however, it limits the signal to noise ratio for each frame and is not as good as adding several long exposure frames together. In both cases, it is critical to ensure that you have good calibration frames to help with the removal of amplifier glow. It can also require a lot of processing power and disk space when manipulating hundreds or thousands of stacked images together.

It has always been virtually impossible to eliminate amplifier glow without post-processing techniques, which means manipulating the raw data, often before it arrives at the computer. The engineers at Starlight Xpress were not about to be beaten!

After working for a few months, experimenting with various clocking routines we have developed a methodology that will allow you to take up to 15 minute exposures with minimal glow, while maintaining your raw data. We call this our No Glow Technology; (Even Sony have asked us how we do it!)

As with all of the TRIUS range of cameras, SX have incorporated a USB hub into the main camera, which offers 3 x USB 2.0 ports at the rear of the camera. Each port is capable of delivering up to 200mA, and is able to drive a Lodestar, or UltraStar for guiding and another two USB ports for our USB filter wheels etc.

This integration greatly reduces the number of cable trails back to the computer and gives less potential cable tangling around the mount during your imaging session.

New 3 stage Peltier cooler combinations have been designed into the CMOS TRIUS cameras, along with the Argon-filled sensor chamber for delivering good cooling to the CMOS sensors.

Starlight Xpress TRIUS PRO 834 CCD Camera

We are pleased to announce the introduction of the TRIUS PRO-834 camera. This is part of SONY ICX 1 format sensor series found in our TRIUS PRO-694 & TRIUS PRO-814 cameras.
The TRIUS PRO-834 has 12 million pixels, each just 3.1 micron square, perfectly suited to very short focal length optics, such as refractors or DSLR camera lenses. (Ideally suited for focal lengths of 300mm - 600mm)
With read-noise figures better than many CMOS cameras, along with high QE (Quantum Efficiency), delta cooling of approx. -45C, 16bit data, and good full well depth figures, this is a great new addition to a wide field deep-sky imaging setup.
As with all of our TRIUS cameras, the CCD chamber is purged with Argon gas to keep the CCD chamber free of moisture. There is also an AR coated fused silica window at the front of the camera and the built-in USB hub for driving your guide camera and filter wheel.

Starlight Xpress TRIUS SX-46 Large Format CCD Camera

The SX-46 CCD Camera is a large format camera with a 16.7MP KAF-16200 sensor with APS-H format which measures 27.21.6mm with 6um pixels.

The use of a full frame sensor requires the emploeyment of a mechancial shutter and Starlight Xpress have developed a custom roller blind assembly that uses mni stepper motors to provide an extremely unform shutter action.

The SX-46 incorporates many features that iprove on some of the other KAF 16200 based CCD Cameras.

1_ A Multi Coated SYnthetic Saphire inpit window. The extremely high thermal conductivity of saphire (about 25x better than glass) eliminates the need for a window heater by conductng waste heat from the camera body to the entire window surface.Dewing of the window is extrenely unlikely to occur, even with maximum CCD cooling.

2) A stepper driven roller blind shutter with extremely unform illumination of the sensor even at 0.1 second exposure time.The shutter is designed for robust long term use but is also very easy to service or replace if necessary.

3) A compact, dry argon filled CCD chamber, with O ring sealing. No desiccant to regularly replace. The window is easy to clean with an air duster or soft cloth.

4) Built-in LED flood illuminator for RBI elimination (trapped electrons from previous images).

5) Fast image download time - approximately 6.5 seconds for a full 16.7 megapixel image.

6) A three stage Peltier cooler to give better than -50C below ambient, with an efficient temperature controller to keep power consumption to less than 2 amps at 12v DC.

7) Standard 'Trius' 3 port USB 2 hub built-in.

8) A compact overall size of 136 mm square and 70 mm deep (+ handles). Only 1.7 Kg total weight.
